Catering to your child’s needs genuinely and compassionately.
(Rosewood Home Care) caregiver taking care of the kid

Taking care of a child who has health challenges is one of the most draining tasks a parent/guardian can face. Beyond the usual medical and physical needs of the child, these parents still have to take care of the needs of their other children.

Usually, when a child is going through an illness, they feel frightened and worried, and this is when they need their parents or guardians most. Because of this, the parents are likely to direct all their energy on the ailing child, making it totally impossible to make time for their other kids.

For such families, daily plans or routines can get disrupted because everyone’s thoughts and energy are directed towards meeting the needs of the ailing child. Family outings and holidays become a thing of the past, and many are the times one parent or both will miss work when the child’s condition demands it.

All this can affect the family in many ways – for parents and other family members, strong emotions like anger, sadness, fear, guilt, depression, and anxiety can be experienced. For the ill or ailing child, they may feel guilty about holding the family hostage through their limitations and may wish to find a way to be as independent as their health would allow.

To avoid all this, it is important for families who have a sick or disabled child at home to do everything they can to maintain a sense of normalcy in their lives. This is where pediatric home care comes in.

In the simplest terms possible, pediatric home care is a supportive care service that helps children with special needs, such as a physical or mental disability, with their activities of daily living. These activities include but are not limited to bathing, grooming, meal preparation, feeding, play and entertainment, light housekeeping, and others.

Pediatric home care services are also available for children who are recovering from an illness or surgery, and those transitioning back home from a hospital or any other medical institution. For these patients, pediatric home care gives them an opportunity to recover faster as there’s less risk of infection at home, and also because being in familiar settings and in the midst of loved ones promotes the process of healing.

This kind of care improves the quality of life for the whole family in many ways. To begin with, parents/guardians and other family members are able to resume their everyday activities guaranteed that the needs of their loved one are being met efficiently. The patients, too, rest easier with the knowledge that they are no longer holding anyone hostage with the demands of their condition.

If you have a sick or disabled child at home, ROSEWOOD HOME CARE’s Pediatric Care Services are dedicated to the needs of your child and your peace of mind in regard to your child’s daily care. Our goal is to provide the best environment for your child to grow or recover in, thus allowing the rest of the family to live their lives fully assured that the needs of their loved one are being met.

Grooming
Good personal hygiene is important for anyone, but for children whose immunity has been compromised by a medical condition, the importance of personal care cannot be overstated. A clean child equals a healthy child, and a child who is recovering from an illness or surgery, or one who has a physical or mental disability needs all the help they can get to ward off infections.

Our pediatric grooming/personal care services are personalized to suit the individual needs of a child, and include but are not limited to:

  • Dental care – teeth brushing, flossing, and rinsing with a mouthwash.
  • Washing, drying, and styling the hair with recommended products.
  • Shaving
  • Bathing
  • Skincare
  • Trimming nails to keep them short and clean
  • Handwashing
  • And more

For children who have a condition that makes it difficult to understand why they need to be clean, our caregivers have been trained to patiently explain the importance of personal hygiene as many times as needed.

Dressing
For children who need help with dressing, our caregivers will help them to get in and out of their clothes as painlessly as possible. Some of the things they have been trained to do include:

  • In hot weather – dressing children in light and loose clothing, using broad-brimmed hats and sunscreen to protect them from the sun, etc.
  • In cold weather – dressing children in warm clothing, etc.
  • Laying out clothes for the children.
  • Choosing clothes that are appropriate, clean and comfortable.
  • Helping the children to dress up for special occasions
  • Allowing the children to do as much as they are able to do for themselves, including choosing their favorite outfits.
  • Ensuring the children are wearing appropriate and comfortable shoes.
  • Notifying the parents or guardians when new items are needed.
  • And more.
Mobility Assistance
Mobility impairments in children can be as a result of illness, physical injury, or conditions that were already present at birth. Providing care to children who have disabilities or temporary mobility impairment requires thoughtful planning for parents and caregivers. In the same way, the participation of the child’s healthcare provider is needed for the child to be able to live life to the fullest.

Meal Preparation and Feeding
When your child is sick, recuperating, or has a special medical condition, a healthy diet can impact their health in many ways, including recovery time and their overall growth and development. A healthy meal should be able to provide a child with adequate calories in the form of micronutrients, macronutrients, and fluid.

In simple terms, the diet of a child, regardless of whether they have special medical needs or not, should contain the following components:

  • Carbohydrates
  • Healthy fats
  • Proteins
  • Vitamins
  • Fiber

Our meal preparation and feeding service for pediatrics is meant to ensure healthy nutrition in our pediatric clients, and to relieve the burden of shopping, cooking, and feeding off the shoulders of busy parents/guardians. Among the tasks that come with this particular service include:

Playing and Entertaining
Playtime is so good for children that it has been identified as every child’s birthright by the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights. As it turns out, there are so many benefits of play and entertainment for children, and they include the following:

  • It stimulates brain growth especially in the parts related to learning and memory.
  • It promotes intelligence by making them learn things faster.
  • It helps trigger creative thinking.
  • It improves communication skills.
  • It improves self-control.
  • It improves social competence.
  • Benefits physical health.
  • It strengthens relationships between children and parents/guardians when they play together.

At Rosewood, we know nurturing a child’s brain is extremely important, especially for children under 5 years of age. This is because, according to experts, 90% of all brain development usually occurs before that age.

And just like the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights, we recognize play and entertainment as every child’s birthright, and more so, children that are housebound for any reason.
